Why Therapy

  • Therapy is a way to help people explore a variety of mental and emotional issues with the aim of relieving distress and finding relief. It provides a safe space to discuss day-to-day struggles or to look into past issues that may be causing challenges in their lives. It’s a very individualized experience—what works for one person may not work for another, and so different interventions, techniques, and modalities are explored to provide clients with the tools they need to improve their lives and find peace.

  • Our first session together will be focused on getting to know one another. It’s important to build a strong relationship initially so that you feel comfortable sharing with me. You don’t have to divulge your darkest secrets immediately, and there’s no pressure to tell your life story. I’d only encourage you to share information that you feel comfortable telling me. I want you to feel safe and secure, and to realize that this is the beginning of the process.

Throughout the session, we will further explore reasons why you are seeking therapy, and what sort of needs or issues you’d like to address during our time together. I may also ask how you’ve managed your mental health in the past, what worked and what didn’t, as a way to understand how best to help you. It can be beneficial for you to plan on asking me questions about any worries or concerns you may have about your treatment.

After our first therapy session, I’d ask you to check in with yourself. Ask yourself how you felt the session went, and how you would feel about going to another one with me. While you may feel a little better or relieved to have gotten the process started, remember that one session won’t cure your symptoms immediately. Healing takes time, practice, and self-care—and that’s what I’m here to facilitate.

  • The process consists of discussing mental and emotional issues with me with the aim of finding peace and joy through healing. How often we meet will be determined by your needs—weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly sessions are common, but we’ll work together to see what fits your needs best. Sessions typically last an hour, and can be in-person or virtual, whichever is your preference.

The first few sessions are typically more focused on information gathering. As we progress and identify your needs, I’ll work with you to introduce techniques to help modify behaviors that are not serving you well, and to provide education about a variety of tools that can help you cope. The goal is to create a safe environment for you to process and work through problems while building a tool box of resources and techniques that will assist in your life’s journey.
